Christopher Newport University's Liberal Learning Core emphasizes breadth and balance in the academic experience.  This core curriculum encourages our students to empower themselves intellectually and practically and to understand and be responsible citizens of the world in which they live.

It also balances university requirements with student choice, allowing students to select from a variety of course offerings to complete their core studies.  Finally, the Liberal Learning Core is designed to help students make connections among disciplines by grouping courses around common themes and areas of study.

The Liberal Learning Core Curriculum has its basis in the CNU Principles of Liberal Learning.

The Liberal Learning Core contains three parts: Liberal Learning Foundations, Liberal Learning Areas of Inquiry and Liberal Learning Emphasis.
